— James Potter in the books vs James Potter in the movies
James was an asshole and grew out of it (evidenced by Lily’s love and acceptance of him after years [fanon ideal recognized] of denying him or hating him or or or). And then he died. Snape, in my head canon, was an angsty, lonely teenage boy who pulled his Dick Card (calling Lily a mudblood) and his I’m-Your-Best-Friend-Until-I-Realize-That-I-Have-Been-Completely-Friend-Zoned-And-Have-Always-Been-In-Said-Zone Card (even though he was, presumably, always only her friend in her eyes). He hated James, missed Lily, and his angst went into bullying Harry. What makes Snape one of the greatest characters is his I love James. I love Snape. So. Yes. — Obviously I need to bust out my Aaron is James Potter-ish gif collection again

Uh. While I am bothered by him ignoring the screaming baby in the background (because I, personally, wouldn’t be able to do that), him holding and crying over Lily’s body is not that strange or awful to me. He loved her. Yes, they had clashing opinions on something fundamental and they chose opposing sides, but he loved her for years. And he found her dead. Ofcoursehe was clutching her and crying. It’s not creepy. If someone you loved died, what would you do? Stare at it and run away? Possible. But you might also fall to your knees, grab the body up, and sob.
And, though it pains me to say it, you may even ignore a crying baby. Your immediate reaction may be enough to tune everything else out. It is entirely possible and, seeing as Snape hated James and wanted nothing to do with Harry because he was half-James’, it’s likely he didn’t even register the fact that the baby was crying, not really. In my opinion, something in him snapped, and all that mattered to him was Lily. Think about it, his love for her was so great that he spent therest of his lifeprotecting Harry—or trying to—even though he hated James and hated seeing James in Harry. He protected Harryfor Lily. So, yes, he ignored the crying baby while mourning the loss of the woman he had been in love with since childhood. Boo hoo.
Also, if Lily miraculously saw him holding her body and crying over it, I highlydoubt she would have been all, “Ew, Snape, gtfo~” They were best friends for a long time, and then they weren’t. And though she disliked his choices and that broke their friendship, I don’t think she hated him or was repulsed by him. She probably disliked his choices and his “friends”, probably even hated him for a while after The Incident—but the Lily Evans-Potter I read about in the books was not so fickle as to be completely and utterly repulsed by a human being who didn’t share her views. I think she was far more intelligent and empathetic than that.
